Judge Antonio Ingroia
Italy and Europe Are on the Front Line
In the Danger of a Nuclear War
This is the edited transcript of the presentation by Antonio Ingroia to Panel 1, “Stopping the Doomsday Clock—The Common Good of the One Humanity,” of the Schiller Institute’s Nov. 22 conference, “For World Peace—Stop the Danger of Nuclear War: Third Seminar of Political and Social Leaders of the World.”
Judge Ingroia is a former anti-mafia Magistrate in Sicily, who worked with the well-known judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, who were both assassinated in 1992 by the mafia. He was a candidate for Prime Minister of Italy in 2013 on the Azione Civile slate, and then again recently in the national elections for the Sovereign and Popular Italy platform, which was fighting for peace and for an exit from NATO. He had engagements with the United Nations, fighting against drugs and organized crime.
Judge Ingroia spoke in Spanish, with English simultaneous interpretation and closed captioning. The full proceedings of the conference are available at the Schiller Institute website.
Good afternoon to all our friends who are connected to this very important meeting for peace in the world.
I am Italian, and I believe that we face a very grave threat right now in the world, in which the entire human race is at risk. So, what is needed is an effort, a very big effort, a political moral, cultural and ethical effort, we could say, because all of the world’s people are together facing this threat, this danger of the end of the human species. Very possibly, very probably a nuclear war is the greatest, the worst catastrophe that we can see in our future.
Thus, as an Italian and a citizen of the world, as a political person, as someone involved in seeking the best future for us all, I believe that we need unity and a dialogue among all of us, a world dialogue of the most responsible parties to confront this threat. Italy and Europe are on the front lines facing this danger, but the entire world is in danger.
A meeting or meetings such as this are very important to pressure world leaders to choose a way forward or the best pathway to achieve peace for all citizens. This is no time for one or another country to exert its supremacy or its imperialism in the world. This is the time to think of the future of all humanity. I believe that we all have to do everything we can, and we can do a lot.
I truly believe that nations that are united can do a great deal. The force of a united people cannot be stopped. Our mission is to build a universal alliance, a world alliance against war, against the spirit of war, to build a real and lasting peace in the interest of the nations of the entire world.
I am here in Italy but I can be with our friends in Latin America. I believe Latin America is a very important place from which to send a very strong message to all the leaders of the most powerful nations to really change the direction away from their tragic spirit of war that we must replace with a spirit of peace.
Thanks to you all, and let’s proceed. I am here and I am happy to answer your questions.
Thank you.
