PRESS RELEASE

More Congressmen Join Bill
To Impeach Cheney

June 29, 2007 (EIRNS)—The momentum to force President of Vice Dick Cheney out continues to grow in Washington, with the addition of two new co-sponsors to Rep. Dennis Kucinich's H.R. 333—legislation to impeach Cheney for "high crimes and misdeamenors."

The latest co-sponsors, according to www.thomas.gov, are Rep. Hency "Hank" C. Johnson (D-Ga.) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), both Democratic freshmen. Freshmen, as a group, largely view the Democratic sweep of Congress in 2006 as a mandate to impeach Cheney, end the Iraq War, and rebuild the U.S. economy.

Rep. Hank Johnson is a member of the Judiciary Committee, to which the Kucinich Resolution has been referred. In a release made available to EIR by his office, Rep. Johnson said he is "fed up with the Vice-President operating as if he is above the law." The Representative, a former prosecutor and judge, said, "It is time to send a message to the Vice-President that such arrogance cannot go without an equally serious response. Recent assertions that he is not part of the Executive Branch, and indifference to an Executive Order relating to the handling of classified material, is outrageous—and was the last straw for me."

In addition, ten-term Congressman Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) announced on the House Floor last night, "Madam Speaker, it's time for a new exit strategy, one that removes the Vice-President of the United States from office, voluntarily, if he chooses, but by impeachment if he stonewalls ... I am adding my name to H.R. 333, calling for the impeachment ... The Vice President must either resign or face impeachment."

Rep. Kucinich now has 10 co-sponors to his bill: Democratic Reps. Rep. William L. Clay (Mo.); Janice Schakowsky (Ill.); Rep. Albert Wynn (Md.); Rep. Yvette Clarke (N.Y.); Rep. Lynn Woolsey (Cal.); Rep. Barbara Lee (Cal.); Rep. Maxine Waters (Cal.); Rep. Henry C. "Hank" Johnson (Ga.); Rep. Keith Ellison (Minn.), and, according to his own announcement, Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.)
