Now the New York Times Demands
Impeachment of Gonzales

July 29, 2007 (EIRNS)—The Lyndon LaRouche Political Action Committee (LPAC)issued the following release today.

"Americans have been waiting months for Mr. Bush to fire Attorney General Alberto Gonzales," says the Times in its lead editorial today, "who long ago proved that he was incompetent and more recently has proved that he can't tell the truth."

After exposing some of Gonzales' biggest lies, the Times concludes, "Democratic lawmakers are asking for a special prosecutor to look into Mr. Gonzales's words and deeds. Solicitor General Paul Clement has a last chance to show that the Justice Department is still minimally functional by fulfilling that request. If that does not happen, Congress should impeach Mr. Gonzales."

Speaking on "Face the Nation" today, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) said the call for impeachment was "premature."

Lyndon LaRouche responded: "That's interesting, because that does change the agenda, if that started. 'Premature' could mean very simply, that, if Gonzales goes out, then the shield around the Presidency is gone: the Justice Department's shielding the President from the consequences of his own behavior and his Vice President's behavior. That's the issue. And some people will think that's the way to bring the whole shebang down.

"I don't necessarily agree that that's a feasible way, because it has implications of destabilizing the institution of the Presidency,— precisely what we must avoid. You can do anything you want to the President, as long as you don't destabilize the Presidency. Without a strong Presidency which is under our Constitution, there's no chance of solving the problems of the world. We throw it open to the forces of chaos."
