Israeli Columnist Pushes Israel's
Nuclear Option against Iran

March 28, 2012 (EIRNS)—In an op-ed in today's Ynet, columnist Hagai Segal warns that Israel could threaten Iran with its own "unconventional" capabilities to counter "apocalyptic scenarios" of an Iranian counterattack if Israel attacks Iran's nuclear sites. Hagai Segal is no run-of-the-mill commentator, but was a member of the terrorist Jewish Underground which wanted to blow up the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. He also works for Arutz 7, the Jewish settler radio station, which operates offshore. Nonetheless, he is a regular commentator for Ynet, which is part of the mass-circulation daily Yedioth Ahronoth.

Pointing to the just-concluded deal signed for a sixth German Dolpin-class submarine, that "will possess capabilities that are not quite conventional," Segal writes,

"Iran will be thinking twice before it embarks on an all-out war against a state with a highly advanced submarine fleet and one of the best Air Forces in the world. Tehran may even rethink, at the last moment, whether developing a nuclear bomb is truly worthwhile."

He later writes,

"In case Tehran tries to retaliate with force for a strike on its nuclear facilities, we would be able to respond with even greater force.... We are no longer that same old herd being led to the slaughter, as was the case in the early part of the 20th century. We have progressed a little since then; we also acquired some weapons during that time."

Since it is forbidden in Israel to openly write that Israel has a nuclear capability, this is the closest statement implying Israel could use nuclear weapons against Iran I have seen over the recent period.
