PRESS RELEASE
Russian Chief of Staff in U.S.A. for Talks
July 11, 2012 (EIRNS)—Gen. Nikolai Makarov, Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, arrived in the United States yesterday for discussions with top U.S. military figures. The auspices for the visit is the Military Cooperation Working Group of the U.S.-Russia Bilateral Commission, which was set up in 2009. According to statements from Russian media, at the top of the agenda will be the issues of:
- the pending U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan,
- missile defense, and
- the U.S. pivot toward Asia.
Makarov is scheduled to meet with U.S. Chief of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey on July 12.
Given the de facto cooperation between the U.S. and Russian military since the Fall of 2011, to prevent the outbreak of a potentially global thermonuclear confrontation over conflict in Syria and/or Iran, one can assume that war avoidance will be the top item on the agenda.
