There's a Broad Candidates' Movement
for Glass-Steagall—Let's Get It into Action
July 13, 2012 (EIRNS)—Every day, more and more candidates across the country are campaigning for Glass-Steagall as a leading part of their campaign platform.Well over 150 candidates have publicly declared their support for restoring the Glass-Steagall standard. The only constraint in knowing exactly how big this movement has grown in the recent months is determined by how many campaigns have been directly contacted by organizers from the Lyndon LaRouche Political Action Committee, which is the driver behind the entire effort.
Ten candidates who won their primaries (other than the incumbents who have already co-sponsored H.R. 1489) are publicly campaigning for restoring the U.S. banking system to sanity. These include, so far, candidates for the general election in California, Indiana, and New York, as well as half a dozen third-party Presidential candidates.
In addition, every Democrat running for office in King County, Washington State (where Seattle is located), has endorsed the party platform, which calls for reinstating Glass-Steagall.
Exemplary of the attitude of some of these candidates is Kevin Boyd, the Democratic Candidate from the 3rd Congressional District in Indiana, who wrote in response to a LaRouche PAC question on his support for Glass-Steagall:
"As you may know, H.R. 1489 would reinstate Glass-Steagall, which limited commercial bank securities activities and affiliations between commercial banks and securities firms, among other actions. I join Americans from both sides of the aisle in supporting this resolution."
Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., a total of 71 Congressmen have cosponsored H.R. 1489, the bill introduced by Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) more than a year ago. Many Congressmen are still holding back on putting their names onto the bill out of fear, since they know that President Obama opposes a move that will remove the trillion-dollar prop for Wall Street.
And in the Senate, despite some public campaigning by Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) for instituting Glass-Steagall in the recent months, a companion to H.R. 1489 still have not been introduced.
The disintegration of the world financial and economic system has already convinced a top-level faction of the British financial oligarchy to go for Glass-Steagall. Isn't it time for American patriots to rise to the occasion?
