Boehner Speaks for War Crowd, Invites Netanyahu to Congress
Jan. 21, 2015 (EIRNS)—In immediate response to President Obama’s declaration that he would veto any new legislation imposing new sanctions on Iran, House Speaker John Boehner sent an invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, inviting him to address a Joint Session of Congress on Feb. 11. Netanyahu is a vocal opponent of the direction of the current negotiations of the P5+1 with Iran.
"I am specifically asking him to address Congress on the threats posed by radical Islam and Iran," Boehner told a meeting of Republicans this morning. "America and Israel have already stood together in shared cause and common ideals, and now we must rise to the moment again."
The new Republican "leadership" in the Senate has already declared its intention to move ahead with new sanctions. The sponsor of a new anti-Iran sanctions bill, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tennessee), is now the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which held a hearing on the negotiations this morning. The hearing featured an explosion by the ranking member of the committee, Sen. Robert Menendez, against the Administration representatives, because the Administration is unwilling to submit the agreement to the Senate for approval, fearing that this would kill it. Menendez charges the Obama Administration with using "talking points straight out of Tehran."
Who is calling the shots on Boehner’s policy should be no surprise. He is the recipient of the third-largest amount of campaign contributions from Wall Street in the latest election cycle, a cool $3.1 million. (See article, EIR No. 4)
