China’s Xinhua: ‘Uncle Sam: Anti-Terror Leader or Terrorist Breeder?’
Feb. 17, 2015 (EIRNS)—In two separate articles today, China’s Xinhua carries hard-hitting reviews of U.S. backing for terrorists in the name of geopolitical interests—going back to the Afghanistan war’s support for the mujahadin and Osama bin Laden. The two articles—a “backgrounder” and a signed article by Luo Jun—both address this review of U.S. support for terrorism to the White House “Summit on Countering Violent Extremism” that begins on Feb. 17 and culminates on Feb. 19 with an address by Obama. Sixty countries have been invited to attend, but the participants have not yet been announced.
The backgrounder highlights the Afghanistan case in the 1980s:
“Among many perilous and brutal terrorist groups in the world which have been backed by the U.S. government, Al Qaeda is the one particularly ‘exemplary’ to show that the U.S. foreign policy is based on realpolitik and the short-term pursuit of narrow interests. In order to battle against the Soviets’ invasion in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989, U.S. intelligence agencies had backed many Islamic fundamentalist groups ... one Arabian businessman emerged as the best protege of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States in the surrogate war between the two super powers. His name is Osama bin Laden.”
Quoting RT, the backgrounder adds,
“As for the Islamic State (IS), which is even ‘too extreme’ in the eyes of regular al-Qaeda fighters, its key members were trained by the CIA and the Special Forces command at a secret camp in Jordan in 2012, according to RT, citing informed Jordanian officials.”
The second article titled,
“Uncle Sam: Anti-Terror Leader or Terrorist Breeder?” directly addresses the hypocrisy involved in the US policy on terrorism. It is “proper” for Obama to convene a summit because of the “rising threats of terrorism and violent extremism across the world ... but the key to realizing the goal of such a summit is missing.”
Instead, “Washington paid little attention to exploring the root causes of terrorism, which should be deemed intriguing, as the latest villain on its black list, the Islamic State (IS) extremist group, originated not in Iran or the D.P.R.K., both ‘enemies’ of Washington, but in Iraq, a state ‘freed’ and ‘democratized’ by the U.S. itself.” In fact, Xinhua points out, “IS militants drew much of their fighting experience from the West-involved war in Syria, where the Western bloc has supported rebels in their efforts to topple Syrian President al-Assad....
