U.S. Is Sinking Deeper into Saudi War in Yemen
April 8, 2015 (EIRNS)—Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren confirmed, yesterday, that the United States is accelerating weapons shipments to the Saudis.
"It’s a combination of pre-existing orders to our partners and some new requirements," he said, adding that the number of US personnel embedded in the "joint fusion center" in Saudi Arabia has risen to about a dozen. McClatchy News further reports that Tony Blinken, the Deputy Secretary of State, is in Riyadh, where he expressed the full support of the Obama Administration for the Saudi bombing campaign.
"Saudi Arabia is sending a strong message to the Houthis and their allies that they cannot overrun Yemen by force," he said. At the White House, Josh Earnest added that the United States will continue its support for Saudi Arabia’s bombing campaign, which, he said, "is dedicated to addressing legitimate security concerns that they have along their border with Yemen." Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, on his way to Japan, phoned Saudi Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman on Monday to emphasize "the importance of limiting civilian casualties when conducting airstrikes and working towards a political solution in Yemen," the Pentagon said.
The warning on civilian casualties may be falling on deaf ears, however. The Saudis’ "addressing legitimate security concerns" in Yemen with U.S. help, is having a disastrous effect on the civilian population. The ICRC warned, yesterday, that the situation in Aden is turning "catastrophic," and UNICEF calculated that 100,000 people have fled their homes. UNICEF also said that 74 children have been killed since March 26 and another 44 maimed, out of 560 people killed and 1,700 wounded.
"These are conservative figures, and UNICEF believes that the total number of children killed is much higher," the UNICEF statement read. The agency’s Yemen representative, Julien Harneis, said children were paying an "intolerable" price, and said more needed to be done to protect them. "These children should be immediately afforded special respect and protection by all parties to the conflict, in line with international humanitarian law," Harneis said.
The deeper U.S. involvement, possibly in the context of the Obama Administration trying to secure Saudi support for the Iran nuclear deal, underscores Lyndon LaRouche’s warning, issued yesterday, on the greater war danger emanating from the conflict. The danger, LaRouche said, is that, if President Obama is not removed from office he "will probably cause World War III."
LaRouche said that that can be seen already, in the Iran negotiations "with Israel’s involvement in it. The whole thing is a fraud, and was set up to build up a case for the Saudis, to move in, against other forces, by creating a weak point, and then using the Saudis as a way of starting a more general war, which is done by Obama, personally. So, Obama is the enemy of the American people."
