Iran To Seek China’s Cooperation in Setting Up More Nuclear Power Plants
April 14, 2015 (EIRNS)—Spokesman of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi announced today that along with Russia, China will also help Iran build nuclear power plants, Fars News Agency reported. "The Islamic Republic of Iran plans to produce at least 190,000 SWUs (Separative Work Units) of nuclear fuel at the industrial scale, while we also think about 1,000,000 SWUs, which will be needed to fuel five power plants like Bushehr" nuclear power plant, Kamalvandi said. Iran has already reached agreement with Russia on building two more nuclear power plants, completion of those will bring up the number of nuclear power plants in Iran to three.
Iran’s only nuclear power plant, Bushehr, which was inaugurated in September 2013, has a capacity to produce 1000 megawatts of electricity. The power plant is scheduled to produce up to 5 billion megawatt-hours of electricity per year, which is about 2% of country’s total electricity production, Trend News of Azerbaijan reported today. Russia has guaranteed 10 years supply of fuel for Bushehr nuclear power plant.
On April 11, Iranian news agencies had reported Iran has plans to build small nuclear power plants and desalination facilities in the coming years, citing Behrouz Kamalvandi (see April 12 briefing). Building small power plants will be implemented within the next decade, which will be used for a variety of purposes including desalination of seawater, Kamalvandi was quoted saying by the official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
