Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu Points to Nuclear Threat Posed by NATO
April 16, 2015 (EIRNS)—Speaking at the 4th Moscow Conference on International Security, Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu pointed today, at the nuclear threat NATO has posed by deploying tactical nuclear missiles in East Europe.
"The geography of their exercises—exclusively the eastern flank of the alliance and the Arctic region—is proof of their anti-Russian stance," he said.
"Non-nuclear NATO countries are engaged in drills practicing the use of U.S. tactical nuclear armaments deployed in a number of European states," he said. He reminded the audience of the use of U.S. nuclear weapons against Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, and said: "I can only guess what consequences a similar appetite for using nuclear weapons could have entailed for Europe if the U.S. Army had acquired them a bit earlier," alluding to the possible use of nuclear weapons by the U.S. against Germany if those were ready then.
Also speaking at the conference, leader of the Belgium-based National-European Communitarian Party (NCP), Luc Michel, expressed a similar concern. He said "Romania is transforming [itself] into an aggression platform against Russia," and added that countries such as Poland, Bulgaria, and some Baltic countries are also following the footprints of NATO strategy, International Business Times reported today.
Under the NATO-U.S.-led BMD, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency will install an Aegis Ashore BMD complex in Romania in 2015, and a similar system in Poland will be commissioned in 2018. Similar NATO BMD systems with a mix of radars and interceptors will also be placed Turkey and Spain.
