Some U.S. Political Voices of Sanity Counter the War Drive

Aug. 4, 2015 (EIRNS)—Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) is one of the few in Congress who so far have raised their voice in opposition to President Obama’s unconstitutional war in Syria. He has repeatedly insisted that the Congress must abide by its Constitutional mandate to debate and have a determining vote on whether the country should be at war with ISIS. He calls the current situation vis a vis ISIS and Syria “inexcusable”. “How much longer will we allow war to be waged without Congress even being willing to have a debate about the strategy and scope of other missions?” he asked from the Senate floor recently.

This Thursday, Aug. 6, starting at 9:00 AM, Kaine will address this issue in a speech at the Cato Institute in Washington.

In the debate over the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) last month, Kaine cosponsored (with Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.V.)) an amendment to the NDAA expressing the sense of the Senate that it should have an authorization debate about whether the nation should be at war with ISIL. The amendment was ruled out of order.

Also opposing Obama’s war drive, Republican presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul took the opportunity of an Aug. 3 teleconference of the Voters First Forum in New Hampshire, to stress the importance of engaging Russia and China in dialogue.

Asked what country he would first visit after assuming office, Paul said, “As far as the first country I will travel to, I would say either China or Russia." Paul stressed the importance for the United States to “engage with the world.”

“I think that even though China is sometimes our adversary, Russia is sometimes our adversary, we do interact with these once-great superpowers and emerging superpowers.”
