NATO Exercises Are ‘Highly Dangerous’
Aug. 27, 2015 (EIRNS)While ruling out the outbreak of actual war, the former head of German Chancellor Kohl's office, Horst Teltschik, did criticize in strong words the ongoing and planned major NATO exercises and the Russian response, as an unreasonable flexing of muscle, in an interview with Germany's weekly Focus yesterday. "These exercises are to be seen as mutual gestures of threats. Russia is trying to intimidate NATOand vice versa."
Such exercises have been conducted in the past, but in the present context, with strategic dialogue and cooperation absent, "the Russia strategy of NATO is highly dangerous," Teltschik said. "I see this as a giant mistake, for only through dialogue, can confrontations be prevented. ... During the Cold War, NATO had a wiser policy than today." We can no longer talk of a détente policy, he added, because much of the confidence that had been painstakingly built up in the recent decades between Russia and NATO, has been destroyed by the Western Alliance with its strategy.
