Rep. Tulsi Gabbard: Unlawful for U.S. To Wage War in Syria

Nov. 4, 2015 (EIRNS)—U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) told HawaiiNewsNow TV today that it would be illegal for the U.S. to wage war in Syria.

On HawaiiNewsNow’s "Sunrise" show today, Howard Dicus reported,

"Today, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard sharpened her criticism of the decision to put American special forces on the ground in Syria. Her opposition is twofold: that U.S. actions in Syria are ill-advised, and that they are illegal without Congressional debate and a declaration of war. In recent days two staunch Obama supporters, Sens. Hirono and Schatz, (both of Hawaii) have expressed similar concerns."

Rep. Gabbard told the reporter,

"We, as the U.S., should not be doing anything that would help the Islamic extremists in achieving their goal to overthrow [Syrian President] Assad... Any troops, money, or weapons that may be directly or indirectly used to help Islamic extremists who are our enemies in this illegal, counterproductive war would be illegal."

Congress and the American people must authorize any war.

"There are two wars occurring there. Assad is fighting ISIS, Al Qaeda, and Al Nusra, the same groups that attacked the U.S. on 9/11, that Congress authorized us to go to war against. Then, you have a civil war, where the opposition forces of which the most effective forces are our sworn enemies—ISIS, Al Qaeda, and Al Nusra—have declared war against Assad. The U.S. government has not declared war against the government of Assad, who is trying to hold on to power. Waging war against Assad is an illegal war, because there has been no war declared by Congress against the Syrian government of Assad."
