Moscow Security Conference Convenes This Week

April 23, 2016 (EIRNS)—The Fifth Moscow Conference on International Security will be taking place on April 27-28 (according to the Defense Ministry website), and the topic driving the sessions will be terrorism. Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov reported on March 15 that the Russians expect 20 defense ministers, 15 chiefs of staff, as well as two deputy secretary generals of the UN, the OSCE secretary general, the director general of the ICRC and high representatives of the CIS, CSTO and the Arab League. There was so much interest in the conference, Antonov said, that it had to lengthened to two days to accommodate everyone who wanted to speak. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu will also take the opportunity of the conference to have many bilateral meetings with his counterparts from numerous other countries.

Topics to be discussed during the plenary sessions include Asia-Pacific security, problems of war and peace as well as global security and military cooperation. Four other panel discussions will cover conflicts in the Middle East, traditional and new challenges to threats to international security, the role of the armed forces in countering color revolutions and ensuring security in Central Asia. RT reported on April 20 that some three hundred journalists have been accredited to cover the conference.

The Defense Ministry website says it will be providing a live stream of the conference at the website dedicated to it. The conference agenda is also available.
