German Economic Minister: U.S. Should Drop Iran Sanctions
Oct. 4, 2016 (EIRNS)—Germany’s Economic Minister and Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel told Iranian President Rohani yesterday that he would press the U.S. to lift economic restrictions on Iran, as stipulated in the 2015 nuclear deal. Gabriel, leading a delegation of 120 senior business leaders from Germany to Iran, said Germany
"intends to remind the United States of its commitment to get an effective dismantling of sanctions. Washington should act on its responsibilities concerning Iran so the outcome of the nuclear deal becomes visible in Iran."
Russia’s RT reported that Germany intends to sign 10 key deals, and boost economic trade with Iran by 2.5 billion euros.
Although the U.S. and UN sanctions were lifted in January 2016, the Iranian President said this lifting has been "flawed," and that many European banks and businesses have stayed away from commerce with Iran, out of fear that their dealings will endanger their dealings with U.S. financial institutions that are still banned from dealing with Iran. The U.S. response, RT says, is that it is fulfilling its state obligations, [but] it’s up to individual companies if they want to invest in Iran.
