New York Times Complains Trump Is Reluctant To Embrace Tougher Russia Policy

March 31, 2018 (EIRNS)—In an article today, the New York Times complains that, while his advisors continue to press for more aggressive action towards Russia, President Donald Trump, himself, is reluctant to change his personal approach of seeking good relations with President Vladimir Putin. Outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, whose last day on the job is today, is identified with the anti-Russian shift that began weeks ago, and this view was

“hardened by a conversation he had with British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, during which Johnson described to him the [alleged] nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter.”

The Times article reports that Pentagon officials are not so sanguine, however, and are worried about the consequences of the collapse in U.S.-Russian relations for military deconfliction in Syria.

The New York Times observes bitterly: “Trump has remained publicly silent amid the dramatic rounds of diplomatic retaliation, leaving it to others to condemn Moscow.”
