GE and EDF Team Up To Build India’s Six-Reactor Nuclear Power Plant

June 28, 2018 (EIRNS)—In a joint statement released on June 26, General Electric and the Électricité de France (EDF) utility have agreed to team up to build six reactors for a nuclear power project at Jaitapur, south of Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra in western India. When built, the six European Pressurized Water reactors will have a generation capacity of 9,900 MW—the largest in the world by a single power plant, Reuters reported.

EDF will be responsible for engineering integration of the entire project, while GE Power will design the critical part of the plant and supply its main components, the companies said. GE will also provide operational support services and a training program to meet the needs of the state-run Nuclear Power Corp. of India Ltd., the plant’s owner and operator.

Meanwhile, Press Trust of India reported on June 27 that U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry, who had discussed partnering with India in nuclear power during a visit in April, said June 26 the U.S. needs to take steps to have the latest technology and efficient methods to produce nuclear power, otherwise it will be conveyed to countries such as India and Saudi Arabia that America is not committed to nuclear power.

“If we don’t keep our ability to be a player in a technological sense, whether it’s building reactors as Westinghouse Electric Co. does or whether it’s the pipeline of young people moving into nuclear energy because they see a future there. If we were to lose our ability to be a player in the nuclear power business, it’s going to have a long-term impact,”

he said.
