Presidents Putin and Trump To Meet in Helsinki on July 16
June 28, 2018 (EIRNS)—The summit of Russian and U.S. Presidents, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, will take place in Helsinki on July 16, the Kremlin press service announced today. “Under the agreement, the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump will take place on July 16 in Helsinki,” the statement said, stating that the two leaders will discuss “the current state and prospects of further development of Russian-U.S. relations and also vital issues of the international agenda,” and a similar statement was released by the White House.
According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the meeting is likely to last several hours: There will be a protocol event, a tte-á-tte meeting, and a joint news conference. Ushakov suggested that Putin and Trump could make a joint statement outlining
“the two countries’ further steps both in terms of improving bilateral relations, in terms of joint steps in the international arena, and in terms of maintaining global stability and security,”
he said.
The chance of a follow-up meeting was mooted earlier by U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton, who told a Moscow press conference on June 27 that he did not know whether President Donald Trump would attend the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Sept. 11-13, but he would not rule it out.
