The Effect of the Xi-Modi Meeting in Wuhan Seen Again

June 28, 2018 (EIRNS)—China’s Defense Ministry reported today on the impending visit to India by Maj. Gen. Liu Xiaowu, deputy commander of China’s western military region. (He will also visit Pakistan.) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed in April during their April 27 one-on-one meeting at Wuhan, to open a new chapter in ties, just months after a dispute over a stretch of their high-altitude Himalayan border rekindled fears of war, Press Trust of India stated.

Another effect of the Wuhan talks was evident during the recent visit to China by the Nepalese Premier K.P. Oli Sharma. During his visit, the Chinese side made clear its intent to engage deeply with Nepal, and develop special ties with its Himalayan neighbor. As explained in a report by The Hindu,

“Beijing also made it plain that China-Nepal ties would be docked with India’s shared interests as well. The Chinese leadership, in fact, made direct reference to the April Wuhan informal summit, which has begun to have a cascading impact on the region. The Chinese made it clear that they were not interested in pursuing a zero-sum approach with Nepal. In fact, the hosts spoke about the Wuhan informal summit between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the discussion between the two leaders on achieving greater regional cooperation, which covered connectivity, the source said.”
