China Looks Forward to Stronger Ties with Mexico Under López Obrador

July 30, 2018 (EIRNS)—China’s Ambassador to Mexico Qiu Xiaoqi is confident that bilateral relations under the President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador, nicknamed AMLO, will become much stronger, with unlimited possibilities for expanded investment and cooperation. In fact, AMLO has extended an official invitation to China’s President Xi Jinping, to attend his inauguration on Dec. 1.

In an article published in El Economista July 29, Qiu reported that the 300 representatives of 220 Mexican companies attending the monthly meeting of the Mexican Institute of Finance Executives expressed great optimism about expanding trade and economic relations over the next five years. Qiu said,

“I’m confident that more companies from both countries will join in binational cooperation and in the Belt and Road Initiative, to broaden cooperation in areas such as energy, infrastructure, finance and trade.”

Following a July 26 celebration in Mexico City of the founding of China’s People’s Liberation Army, Qiu told Milenio that China’s infrastructure-building capabilities had significantly improved, and that

“we’re able to build any kind of infrastructure project, and that’s why we want to lend our experience to Mexico ... we’re prepared to promote cooperation in all areas. I’m willing to work very closely with the new government led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador.”

Yeidckol Polevnsky, head of AMLO’s Morena party, told Milenio she was sure that once AMLO takes office, diplomatic ties with China will be grow greatly. “We’re very interested that these ties become very strong.”
