One in Ten New York City Students Is Homeless!

Oct. 16, 2018 (EIRNS)—“Tonight, about one out of every ten students in New York City will sleep in a homeless shelter or in the homes of relatives,” the New York Times’s Eliza Shapiro reported yesterday. This is a higher number of children than at any other time since city records have been kept. There are about 1.1 million children in the city’s public schools.

Since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office in 2014, the number of homeless children have continued to grow, and there has been no significant increase in public or private funding to support these students.

New York has one of the highest populations of homeless students of any big city in America, some 110,000.

At 144 public schools, one-third of the children are homeless.

In one Bronx school district, 10,804 students are homeless.

For every 1,660 homeless students, there is roughly 1 social worker.
