Mike Huckabee Warns, Green New Deal Can Create U.S. Backlash Bigger than French Yellow Vests

March 20, 2019 (EIRNS)—In a commentary published in RealClearPolitics today, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee warned that any attempt to impose a Green New Deal in the U.S. would unleash a response from the population far beyond what the Yellow Vest movement has done in France.

Democrats are predicting a “climate-change-fueled apocalypse” scenario 12 years from now, Huckabee observes, but in Paris, “we’re seeing a preview of a real doomsday scenario that would result from radical policies such as the Green New Deal.” He writes that the Yellow Vests are attacking President Emmanuel Macron’s environmental extremism—the gas tax which has brought real hardship to the French people, especially those living in rural areas where people rely on cars for transportation. But Macron’s form of “elitist authoritarianism pales in comparison to the ‘green dream’ pushed by liberal elites here in America.”

Were the Green New Deal to actually become law, it would impose enormous hardship on American workers and consumers, Huckabee warns. Costing $93 trillion, it would likely displace 10 million workers from high-paying jobs in oil and gas industries. Adoption of this “radical environmentalist pipedream” would mean exorbitant increases in the cost of electricity, gas, heating and food. Americans aren’t likely to sit by meekly and allow themselves to be starved, without heat, transportation, etc. Yellow Vests saw the handwriting on the wall, Huckabee emphasizes. “Will Americans prove as prescient?” he asks.
