Is Italy Mediating between Trump and Xi?
March 21, 2019 (EIRNS)- Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said yesterday that “I cannot exclude” that the Chinese President, after his visit to Italy, will cross the Atlantic. There could be “a summit between Trump and Xi” and, if the negotiation is successful, “it might end the trade war.” Corriere della Sera interprets this as Italy mediating between China and the U.S.
Corriere correspondent Paolo Salom reports that Xi’s long article published yesterday “has filled social media in China despite the fact that it was written in Dante’s language.” A Global Times editorial expresses satisfaction with Xi’s visit, writing that the visit will have “a deep impact” and “a major significance” on relations with China, Salom says. Italy’s joining the BRI will help expand “the circle of China’s friends.”
