Putin Repeats Call for Summit of Five UN Founding Members at 75th Anniversary of Auschwitz Liberation

Jan. 23, 2020 (EIRNS)—Russian President Vladimir Putin today partly echoed Schiller Institute President Helga Zepp-LaRouche’s Jan. 3 call for an emergency summit of the heads of state of the United States, Russia and China.

Speaking today at the Fifth World Holocaust Forum in Jerusalem, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Red Army liberation of Auschwitz, Putin again proposed a meeting of the leaders of the permanent members of the UN Security Council. He said:

“I think an example could and should be set by the founding countries of the United Nations, the five powers that bear special responsibility for the preservation of civilization. We have discussed this with several of our colleagues and ... have received a generally positive response to holding a meeting of the heads of state of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: Russia, China, the United States, France and Britain. We can hold it in any country, in any place that our colleagues would find convenient. Russia is ready for such a serious discussion. We intend to send this proposal to the leaders of the Five without delay....

“A summit by the countries that made the chief contribution to the defeat of the aggressor and creation of the post-war world system would play an enormous role in the search for collective answers to the modern challenges and, of course, would demonstrate the common commitment to the spirit of alliance, historical memory and the high ideals and values which our ancestors, our grandfathers and fathers fought for shoulder to shoulder.”
