Hyperactive Secretary Mike Pompeo Proffers, Don’t Worry, Trump Will Bash China for Us

June 2, 2020 (EIRNS)—The ubiquitous Secretary of State Mike Pompeo can’t stay away from the media, or from any other public event, to get out his British-inspired message that the U.S. is at war with China, and that President Donald Trump, of course, will willingly carry out that war.

During a May 31 interview with host Maria Bartiromo on Fox News, Pompeo spent almost the entire time bashing China, repeatedly stating that the “aggressive” Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is a force for evil and has come to “view itself as intent upon the destruction of Western ideas, Western democracies, Western values. It puts Americans at risk.” Railing against Chinese “disinformation,” both on the coronavirus and events in Hong Kong, Pompeo insisted that “all our partners” in Europe are now onboard with the anti-China drive—which is not entirely true—and on the need to expel Huawei. He felt compelled to admit, however, that “some countries” still think working with Huawei isn’t a problem, so “they need to change that,” and “get [Huawei] out of their system.” Or else, what?

On a June 1 podcast sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute, Dick Cheney’s favorite haunt, Pompeo continued to warn that if China doesn’t change its behavior, the U.S. is “going to impose a cost” on its decision-makers “who denied freedom” to the people of Hong Kong. Naturally, he went on, President Trump “will lay out a range of responses that we’re going to undertake.” All major U.S. allies, he claimed, understand they can no longer rely on a commitment from the CCP.

When his AEI hosts asked if he’s considering bringing Hong Kongers to the U.S., to take advantage of their “entrepreneurial creativity,” Pompeo replied, “we’re looking at it.”

According to State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus, yesterday Pompeo spoke with his counterparts from the British Empire’s “Five Eyes” partners—Canada, the U.K., Australia and New Zealand, and the U.S.—to discuss coordination on responding to “urgent global challenges, including the P.R.C.’s unilateral and arbitrary decision to impose national security legislation on Hong Kong; Iran’s destabilizing activities in Iraq and the Middle East; and the need for a transparent accounting into the origins of, and global response to, COVID-19.” This afternoon, Pompeo accompanied the President and First Lady for a brief visit to the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, after which the President returned to the White House to sign an executive order in defense of “global religious freedom.”
