United Arab Emirates Becomes First Arab Nation To Generate Nuclear Power
Aug. 1, 2020 (EIRNS)—The first nuclear power generated in the Arab world took place today, as the first of four nuclear power plants being built by South Korea’s KEPCO was fired up on the Persian Gulf. The plant was expected to open in 2017, but the start-up was repeatedly delayed because of various safety issues. The four plants will eventually provide one-fourth of the U.A.E. energy needs.
As EIR has reported, the U.A.E. launched a satellite named Hope—Al Amal, in Arabic—on a mission to orbit Mars on July 19 from Japan—another high-profile scientific first for an Arab nation. The mission aims to be the first mapping of the Martian atmosphere in its planned two years orbiting Earth’s neighbor.
