Polish Defense Ministry Hypes Permanent Stationing of U.S. Troops in Poland

Aug. 1, 2020 (EIRNS)—Poland‛s Defense Ministry issued a statement yesterday reporting that the U.S. will establish a permanent military presence in Poland of about 1,000 troops. “We did it. We have finished the negotiations on military cooperation,” Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said in a statement. Under the plan, the total number of U.S. troops in Poland will rise to about 5,500, including rotational units. The negotiations followed agreements between U.S. President Donald Trump and Polish President Andrzej Duda in 2018 and 2019.

Implementation of those agreements includes the transfer of elements of the U.S. Army’s V Corps headquarters to Poland. Establishing a structure at this level in Poland will significantly expand the possibilities of cooperation between Polish and U.S. troops in ongoing military maneuvers and exercises, the Polish press agency PAP reported. It also extends the provocative permanent placement of U.S. and NATO forces closer to Russia’s border.
