Biden Weighs in on Supreme Court

Sept. 20, 2020 (EIRNS)—The appointment of a new Supreme Court Justice is an extremely significant decision, with effects that could be felt for decades. There will be a huge fight around President Donald Trump’s nomination of a replacement for the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Joe Biden spoke at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center: “To jam this nomination through the Senate is just an exercise in raw political power. I don’t believe the people of this nation will stand for it.... Even if Trump puts forward a name now, the Senate should not act until the American people select their next President.” So how far before an election should a President not be allowed to exercise his or her authority in that office? According to Biden’s twisted logic, the fact that some people have already voted early means Trump is no longer able to act as President. “People will not stand for this; they’ll not stand for this abuse of power, this Constitutional abuse.”

Constitutional abuse? Try reading the actual document. The text is plain: “[The President] shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint ... Judges of the supreme Court.”
