National Security Adviser O’Brien Likens China Navy Build-Up to Pre-World War I Germany in 1914

Oct. 8, 2020 (EIRNS)—Speaking on Oct. 7 at the University of Nevada, National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien said that China’s “massive” naval build-up probably not seen since Germany’s attempt to compete with the Britain’s Royal Navy prior to World War I, was creating a dangerous situation. He warned China that any attempt at invasion of Taiwan would not be easy since Taiwan’s beaches were 100 miles away. He said that Taiwan should spend more money in arming itself and make itself into a “porcupine. Lions generally don’t like to eat porcupines,” he quipped. He reiterated that the U.S. was required by law to provide Taiwan with any equipment it may need to defend itself.

Equally ambiguous, but more threatening, were the comments of Mike Pompeo to the Washington Examiner. Responding to the question of what the U.S. would do if China attacks Taiwan, Pompeo said, the U.S.

“will be a good partner for security. Our military has been very active in the region, ensuring that we have a presence so that we can ensure that there is, in fact, a capacity for a free and open Indo-Pacific. Whether it’s Taiwan or the challenge presented to Japan, the United States will be a good partner for security in every dimension.”
