Reset Nagorno-Karabakh Ceasefire?
Oct. 18, 2020 (EIRNS)—Last night, the government of Azerbaijan in Baku and Armenia in Yerevan issued identical statements announcing that a new humanitarian ceasefire would take effect at midnight local time, after the earlier ceasefire did not hold. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke to both sides yesterday prior to the announcement and stressed that the truce should be observed. Nagorno-Karabakh’s foreign ministry also issued a statement announcing its readiness to accept a ceasefire.
However, within hours each side accused the other of breaking the truce with artillery fire. Officials in Nagorno-Karabakh said Azeri forces had launched an attack on them. There were casualties and wounded on both sides.
