Huge Funds Went To Oust Trump-Backed Senators, but Six of the Top Seven Challengers Lost
Nov. 4, 2020 (EIRNS)—The tally of donations for key Senate races kept by OpenSecrets.org, shows the size of the big bucks that went for the purpose of unseating incumbent Republican officeholders, and preventing new ones. The Democratic contenders lost in six of the seven top races. The candidate funds spent in the top 10 most expensive Senate races adds up to $996.22 millions. The top three donors are Sheldon Adelson, Michael Bloomberg, and Tom Steyer, according to OpenSecrets.org.
South Carolina: Jaime Harrison (D) deployed $107,568,737, the highest warchest for Senate in the nation, and he still lost to Lindsey Graham (R), who raised $68,767,167, for the fourth highest Senatorial warchest.
Arizona: Mark Kelly (D) raised $88,856,406, the second highest Senatorial campaign warchest, and he succeeded in beating Martha McSally (R), an appointee officeholder, who raised $55,772,809, the sixth highest nationally.
Kentucky: Amy McGrath (D) raised $88,098,919, the third highest amount, and she lost to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R), who raised $50,772,809, the seventh highest Senatorial warchest.
Maine: Sara Gideon (D) raised $68,577,474, for the fifth highest Senate campaign, and she lost to incumbent Susan Collins ®.
Iowa: Theresa Greenfield (D) raised $47,004,937, eighth-highest, and lost to incumbent Joni Ernst (R).
North Carolina: Cal Cunningham (D) had a $46,795,494 warchest, ninth highest, and lost—according to preliminary ballot returns as of Nov. 4, which Cunningham disputes, to incumbent Thom Tillis (R).
Montana: Steve Bullock (D) had the tenth biggest Senatorial campaign warchest of $42,773,128, and lost to incumbent Steve Daines (R).
