Suicide and Euthanasia Revived by German Courts and Movies
Nov. 27, 2020 (EIRNS)—On Nov. 24, Germany’s Deutsche Welle news service reported on the resurgence of support for euthanasia in Germany. They say that a poll surveying responses to a film portraying a fictional treatment of a healthy widower’s request that he be provided with poison, having given up on life after the death of his wife, resulted in approximately 70% favoring and 29% opposing his request.
The article links to a report on a German high-court ruling that revoked a five-year criminal restriction on individuals assisting in arranging suicides as “a recurring pursuit.” A factor in the decision, they report, is that Germans found it inconvenient or expensive to travel to the Netherlands or Switzerland to legally obtain assistance in suicide or hire someone to perform euthanasia.
