India To Convene UN Security Council Meeting on Afghanistan

Aug. 5, 2021 (EIRNS)—India, which holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of August, will convene a public UNSC meeting on Afghanistan on Aug. 6, reports the New Indian Express. The session is reportedly the result of a meeting between Afghan Foreign Minister Haneef Atmar and Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar called “to discuss convening an emergency UN Security Council Session” on Afghanistan.

Atmar said the UN and the international community must play a greater role to stop the unfolding tragedy in Afghanistan due to Taliban violence and atrocities. “Appreciate the lead role of India as current UNSC President,” Atmar had tweeted.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN T.S. Tirumurti had said that the situation in Afghanistan is of deep concern to all members of the Security Council and “we have seen that in recent days, the violence is only increasing. We are convinced that ... we should address the question of violence and the targeted attacks, and these are very serious concerns and all violence must come to an end. Ties with international terrorism should also be cut. We cannot have terrorist camps once again moving back into Afghanistan. And this will have a direct impact on India.”
