U.S. Sending Troops to Kabul To Start Evacuation of Embassy
Aug. 12, 2021 (EIRNS)—State Department spokesman Ned Price said during his regular briefing today that the U.S. will temporarily send troops into Afghanistan to help with evacuation of some personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Kabul. The announcement comes as the deterioration of the military situation in the country accelerates. The number is a force of 3,000, cited in early media accounts.
Price said that a “core” diplomatic staff would continue its operations in Kabul. “The embassy remains open. We plan to continue our diplomatic work in Afghanistan,” he said, including processing visas of asylum applications.
