Sept. 19, 2021 (EIRNS)—On Sept. 18, Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the 6th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) via video. He was invited to do so by Mexico, which is the current rotating president of CELAC.
Xi emphasized that over the 10 years of CELAC’s existence, both China and CELAC have deepened their cooperation, and their joint dedication to peace and stability in the region.
CGTN reported that he “recalled the establishment of the Forum of China and CELAC in July 2014, saying the forum has developed a new way for the comprehensive cooperation between China and Latin America. He added that the forum has flourished over the past seven years and become a major platform for bringing together friendly forces from all walks of life in China and Latin America, making important contributions to deepening China-Latin America relations.”
He also said that in facing the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve been involved in intensive cooperation to address the challenges of the spread of the disease. “The Chinese President added that China is willing to work with LAC countries to overcome difficulties together and jointly create opportunities to build a community of shared future between China and Latin America.”
He concluded by saying, “China-Latin America friendship is time-honored and deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.”
CGTN mentioned at the end of its video report that 18 of the 32 CELAC members supported the creation of the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency.
