U.S. Democracy Summit, No Invite to Russia, China, or Hungary, but Puts Taiwan on the Guest List

Nov. 24, 2021 (EIRNS)—The United States has invited 110 attendees to its so-called “Democracy Summit.” Neither Russia nor China were invited. But, in the latest provocation against China, Taiwan will be attending!

Also uninvited are Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. While the dubious democracy of Ukraine was invited, Hungary (a member of the European Union and NATO) was not. Hungary thus joins Saudi Arabia, Iran, and North Korea, as well as such allegedly infamous non-democratic states of Venezuela and Nicaragua.

The Summit will take place on Dec. 9-10 and will be hosted virtually by Biden. Its website states its three main themes:

1. Defending against authoritarianism.

2. Addressing and fighting corruption.

3. Promoting respect for human rights.

In response to Taiwan being invited, Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said today that the inclusion of Taiwan was a “mistake” and Beijing opposed “any official interaction between the U.S. and China’s Taiwan region.... This stance is clear and consistent. We urge the U.S. to stick to the ‘one China’ principle and the three joint communiqués,” she said as cited by TASS.

After remonstrating against Taiwan’s invitation to the Democracy Summit during his Nov. 24 press conference, P.R.C. Foreign Affairs spokesman Zhao Lijian concluded his response: “As to the ‘Summit for Democracy,’ we have repeatedly stated our position. Democracy is a common value of all humanity, not the patent of a few countries. What the U.S. has done shows exactly that it is only using democracy as a cover and tool to advance its geostrategic goals, suppress other countries, divide the world, and serve its selfish agenda of maintaining hegemony. Its acts of practicing bloc politics and inciting confrontation under the guise of democracy are reincarnation of the Cold War mentality and have been widely questioned and rejected by visionary people of the international community.”
