Some Russian Responses to Democracy Summit: A ‘Summit for Global Dominance’?

Dec. 11, 2021 (EIRNS)—Senator Konstantin Kosachev, the Deputy Speaker of Russia’s Federation Council, denounced U.S. President Joe Biden’s Summit for Democracy as a call for “a unilateral world” controlled by the U.S. “The idea certainly was not to just review forces in the run-up to the upcoming fight for democracy. It was about convincing the world that those who oppose the unilateral world order actually oppose democracy. It is quite a simple manipulation but it serves an important ideological mission aimed at camouflaging the geopolitical causes of the current crisis as those related to values,” the Russian senator emphasized.

“It is foreign policy that was the focus rather than the domestic one, it was about being loyal to America,” Kosachev stressed. “It is a perfect signal to all the pseudo-democracies in the world: proclaim a policy guided by the West, vote the right way in the United Nations and you will be allowed to do whatever you will at home.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said at an online briefing on Dec. 10: “Although the event is dubbed the Summit for Democracy, it’s not directly related to democracy. The title is no more than a hashtag and a slogan.”

Ryabkov considers the summit’s goal as not to discuss democracy and human rights but to discuss the fight to ensure the global dominance of the U.S. and like-minded nations. “Had the United States called their event the Summit for Global Dominance, it would have been fairer and more correct,” Ryabkov remarks.

A more colorful description was given by a Russian observer, writing in Global Times on Nov. 30, who compared the U.S. initiative to “the madam of a brothel teaching morality to schoolgirls.”
