Russia’s Grushko Affirms, the Moment of Truth Has Come: Will Europe Become a Battlefield?
Dec. 19, 2021 (EIRNS)—Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko directly addressed the need for NATO to hear what Russia is saying and doing with the disarmament proposals they presented to the United States and NATO on Dec. 15: “The moment of truth has come.” He explained on Solovyov Live YouTube channel on Dec. 18: “We have reached a red line and our proposals aim to pull us away from this red line and start a normal dialogue.... We, in a very clear manner, have defined the way forward to achieve that,” reported TASS. However, if NATO turns down the proffered security guarantees, Russia will take that seriously: “We are making clear that we are ready to talk about switching over from a military or a military-technical scenario to a political process” that will strengthen the security of all countries in the area of the OCSE, Euro-Atlantic and Eurasia, TASS quoted him as saying. “If that doesn’t work out, we signaled to them [NATO] that we will also move over to creating counter threats, but it will then be too late to ask us why we made these decisions and why we deployed these systems.”
Grushko contended that NATO has been living in a fantasy world, that has nothing to do with security in Europe. All activities by NATO, such as the continual talking about a threat from the East, only seek to keep the Alliance alive, being its reason for existence. Europeans must think about whether they mean to turn the continent into a field of military confrontation.
