Peskov Refers to Truss as ‘Aggressive, Unfriendly, and Unconstructive’

Sept. 7, 2022 (EIRNS)—Russian government spokesmen were blunt about their evaluation of new British Prime Minister Liz Truss. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS that her attitude “may be judged by the statements that she made when she was Foreign Secretary and a contender for the position of party leader. She didn’t say anything good about us. Moreover, I can say with regret that her statements were quite aggressive, unfriendly and unconstructive.” Peskov continued: “I think that in the situation in which Russia-U.K. relations are now in, we can hope for one thing only—that it won’t get worse. Although it’s hard to imagine how much worse it could get.” Peskov then added: “As for a potential deterioration of the situation, that can’t be ruled out. Right now, we can’t rule anything out, again, given the unpredictability of our opponents.”

Foreign Minister Lavrov responded to media questions Moscow on Sept. 6 about Truss’s attitude towards Russia:

“I think that before Ms. Truss comes up with the final version of her obviously negative position towards Russia, dealing with her closest neighbors is a higher priority. Among other things, she needs to finally decide whether President Macron is a friend or an enemy. ... I think it is more important for the neighbors to sort this matter out first before looking far beyond their borders.”

With typical irony, Lavrov, commented on her “election”:

“We are aware of British democracy’s inner workings. Only 160,000 people purported as Conservative Party members decide on the fate of the government. It is believed that if a party wins the general election, it can appoint the head person from within its own circle behind closed doors. At some point, we discussed this with our British colleagues when they criticized our democratic system. ... The British agreed that it was not the best approach, but, they say, everyone is accustomed to this state of affairs and it’s a tradition, that is why things in the U.K. remain unchanged.”
