EIR LEAD EDITORIAL FOR FRIDAY MAY 5 , 2023

World at a New Danger Point

May 4, 2023, 2022 (EIRNS)—The world watched in horror this week, at, first, the report of the two attack drones deployed against the Kremlin in the early morning of May 3, targetting the official residence of President Vladimir Putin; and secondly, soon afterward, the display of insane venality by U.S. leaders dissimulating and lying about the attack.

This evasive lying was blatant by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who asserted repeatedly yesterday morning that “Ukraine has to defend itself,” in a Washington Post webcast interview, ironically for “World Press Freedom Day.” The lying continued today, with U.S. officials speaking as if Russia were not a nuclear power, and an attack on its President merely ho-hum. They are in a state of mad other-worldliness which marks a new danger point, which could end with nuclear Armageddon.

The stream of U.S. spokesmen this morning included John Kirby, Communications Director for the National Security Council, who spoke on U.S. television; Avril Haines, Director of National Intelligence, who addressed the Senate Armed Services Committee; and a spokesman for the Department of Defense, and other agencies. Their uniform message was to play dumb and arrogant about the drone attacks. For example, Kirby asserted to MSNBC, “We don’t know what happened. We’re still assessing that.... I can assure you, there was no involvement by the United States. Whatever it was, it didn’t involve us.”

From Moscow, a Foreign Ministry statement was issued at 12:01 p.m. today. It stated that Kiev was responsible for the drone attack, and that “the Kiev regime enjoys the support of Western countries, which provide it with weapons, intelligence data, train its fighters and assign targets. The silence on behalf of the collective West demonstrates its connivance with the terrorist methods employed by the neo-Nazi extremist regime in Kiev,” the Foreign Ministry pointed out.

The Ministry text was then followed by spokesmen for both the office of the Russian President and the Foreign Ministry speaking out specifically on the culpability of the United States, the U.K., and NATO in the drone attack.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, speaking to reporters this morning, said of the responsibility for the drone attack on the Kremlin, that “such decisions—choice of targets, choice of means, etc.—are dictated to Kiev from Washington,” warning that the terrorist attack on the Kremlin could trigger an escalation. “Such decisions—the definition of goals, the definition of means, and so on—all this is dictated to Kiev from Washington, and we are well aware of this.” All denials by Ukrainian and U.S. officials that they had no involvement in this attack are “laughable,” Peskov added. “We know full well that decisions to carry out such terrorist actions are made not in Kiev, but in Washington.”

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote (in Russian) on her Telegram channel, “First and foremost, the creators and handlers of the Kiev regime, who hail from Washington, London and NATO, bear overall responsibility for everything that it is perpetrating.”

This situation is a call for citizen mobilization everywhere to speak out for emergency action to denounce the drone attack, and to denounce the degenerate Western leadership behind it. We must take sane measures for de-escalating and ending the Global NATO confrontation in Ukraine and other confrontations.

In the U.S., The LaRouche Organization is using its weekly Fireside Chat broadcast tonight as an emergency venue for discussing the point, under the title, “The People of the U.S. Must Take Back Their Government Now.” Host Dennis Speed was joined by Diane Sare, U.S. Senate candidate for New York; Dennis Small, EIR Ibero-America editor; and Ray McGovern, former CIA analyst and strategic policy expert; and by organizers across the country.

In the invitation to this event, Speed provided the appropriate perspective for this emergency:

“Yesterday the entire world, and everything you may have assumed about its future, changed. Ask yourself and everyone you know this question: If a Russia-backed, Russia-financed Cuba were fighting a U.S.-backed ‘Bay of Pigs’-style military force over a period of months, and if Cuba launched two drones against the White House, which were shot down; if, the next day, Russia’s Foreign Minister said, ‘It’s up to the Cubans to decide how they want to fight their war,’ what do you think the U.S. would do?”

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Speak out now for a new world framework for peace, based on economic development and respect for all. Join with the international Schiller Institute mobilization.
