Kiev Regime Claims Russians Blew Up the Kakhovka Dam

June 6, 2023, 2022 (EIRNS)—Not surprisingly, the Kiev regime’s explanation of what happened to the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam follows the same logic as with the ZNPP and the Nord Stream pipeline attack: The Russians bombed themselves. “The Kakhovka HPP was blown up by the Russian occupying forces. The scale of the destruction, the speed and volume of water, the probable areas of flooding are currently being established. All services are working. The situation is being monitored,” Ukrainian forces’ Operational Command South said, reported Ukrinform.

Naturally, the EU has enthusiastically jumped on the Kiev regime’s bandwagon. “Shocked by the unprecedented attack of the Nova Kakhovka dam,” European Council President Charles Michel declared on Twitter. “The destruction of civilian infrastructure clearly qualifies as a war crime—and we will hold Russia and its proxies accountable.”

Russia has, also not surprisingly, rejected the Kiev regime’s attribution of the destruction of the dam to Moscow. When asked whether Russia could be behind the attack on the Kakhovka HPP, Russia’s Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said, “Naturally not.”

“What is it about the mental health of those who say such things? Could we commit an act of sabotage at this plant and its dam when water flooded territories under Russia’s control?” he said.

A number of postings on Telegram point out that last month, Michael Kofman, Russia analyst at U.S. government contractor CNA, told a War on the Rocks podcast that destroying the dam “would mean Russia essentially blowing its own foot off.” It “would flood the Russian-controlled part of the Kherson region ... much more than the western part that the Ukrainians are likely to liberate.”

That appears to be what is happening, except that Kofman’s analysis is now being buried. “Before the Kakhovka dam was blown up, Western analysts admitted that Ukraine had the motive—not Russia,” reports the Intel Salva Z Telegram. “Now they’re trying to erase these facts from the internet. They have to pretend the war crime was ordered by Putin, not Zelenskyy.”
