Will the Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant Be the Next Infrastructure Targeted in Ukraine?

June 10, 2023, 2022 (EIRNS)—On June 5, the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline, that extends from Togliatti in Russia’s Samara Region to the Black Sea port of Odessa, was blown up in Russian-held territory in Ukraine—sabotaging Russia’s efforts to export fertilizer to developing sector nations as part of the Black Sea Grain Initiative. On June 6, the Kakhovka dam and hydroelectric plant was destroyed, flooding Russia’s defensive positions on the left bank of the Dnieper.

On June 9, Russian authorities at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant stated: “Ukraine blew up the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric power station in order to distract the world from the failures of their much-publicized counteroffensive. Now they need another disaster, this time a nuclear one, for which they will again blame Russia.” The nuclear plant, Europe’s largest, is upstream from the Kakhova HPP, and draws water from the reservoir for coolant.
