Wang Yi Urges, BRICS Must Resist All Efforts To Undermine Its Unity

July 26, 2023, 2022 (EIRNS)—Speaking July 25 at the 13th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisers and High Representatives on National Security in Johannesburg, South Africa, Wang Yi, reappointed yesterday as China’s Foreign Minister, emphasized that a top priority of the nations of the Global South must be to accept the mission of resisting all external interference, and safeguarding both political and regime security. It is crucial to counter all attempts to undermine the unity of the BRICS, or discredit BRICS cooperation, he said, the China Daily reported today.

Wang is also the director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of China’s Communist Party Central Committee. He emphasized that in today’s very challenging times, BRICS countries will have to further strengthen political mutual trust and strategic coordination, and to continue to provide international public goods that meet the requirements of the times. And, to deal with current security challenges and solve the security “dilemma,” he urged countries to resist unilateralism, hegemony and oppose “decoupling” and “double standards.”

The Foreign Minister emphasized that China is willing to work with all BRICS partners to support each other’s efforts to safeguard national security and stability, and to promote practical cooperation in dealing with international security challenges, so the world can hear “more BRICS voices.” The world should hear a louder BRICS voice “and see it play a greater role,” he emphasized.

In his meeting with South Africa’s Minister to the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who is also coordinator of BRICS National Security Advisors, and is herself High Representative on National Security, Wang stressed that China will always support South Africa in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence and national dignity, and seeks to strengthen high-level exchanges with the country, Xinhua reported.

According to China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning, today, during this meeting, Wang put forward a four-point proposal which calls for joint efforts to end conflicts and rebuild peace, to promote development through revitalization, to seek progress with openness and inclusiveness, and to pursue cooperation in solidarity. Ms. Ntshavheni replied that South Africa wants to cooperate with China and all BRICS countries to ensure the success of the BRICS summit, and open new opportunities for BRICS cooperation.
