Biden Assures ‘Allies and Partners’ That U.S. Support for Kiev Regime Will Continue

Oct. 4, 2023, (EIRNS)—President Joe Biden was on the phone with the leaders of several “allies and partners” yesterday, to assure them that the weapons to Ukraine will continue to flow, despite the turmoil in the U.S. Congress. Biden convened the call “to coordinate our ongoing support for the people of Ukraine as they defend their freedom and independence against Russia’s brutal invasion,” the White House readout reported.

“President Biden reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity, with fellow leaders echoing their commitments. The leaders discussed efforts to provide Ukraine with the ammunition and weapons systems it needs to defend its territory against Russian aggression, to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses to protect its critical infrastructure from Russia’s aerial assaults now and in the coming months, and to repair and harden its energy infrastructure through this winter.” They also talked about aiding Ukraine’s “economic recovery.”

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said afterward that Biden had assured the group of continued U.S. support for Ukraine and of his strong conviction that Congress will not walk away, reported the Associated Press. “Everyone took the floor. The main subject was Ukraine, the situation in Ukraine,” Duda said at a news conference in Kielce, Poland. “President Joe Biden began with telling us about the situation in the U.S. and what is the real political situation around Ukraine. He assured us that there is backing for the continuing support for Ukraine, first of all for the military support. He said that he will get that backing in the Congress.”

Others on the call with Biden included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel, Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, President Klaus Iohannis of Romania, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom, and Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna of France.
