RNC Chairman Mehlman Flips Over Electoral Defeats; Blames LaRouche, in Backhanded Attack on Senator Reid
Nov. 10, 2005 (EIRNS)—This release was issued today by the Lyndon LaRouche LaRouche Political Action Committee.
On Wednesday, Nov. 9, in a conference call with reporters and Republican activists from around the country, Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman attacked Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for remarks made at a press conference the previous day, in which Reid described a "dark cloud" over the White House, and singled out Vice President Dick Cheney as the center of corruption and policy failures. Mehlman accused Senator Reid of having a "Lyndon LaRouche moment."
In response to the Mehlman remarks, Lyndon LaRouche had the following to say:
"Isn't it fascinating? After Tuesday's press conference by Sen. Reid, the Republican Party, the White House, and their media allies did everything in their power to black out any news coverage of the remarks by Senator Reid, concerning the Vice President. Then, the results came in of Tuesday's elections, in which the Democratic Party scored dramatic victories. After RNC Chairman Mehlman read his frantic e-mails on Wednesday, he came out with his silly comments.
"I guess," LaRouche continued, "the bottom line is this: The Republicans are really hurting after Tuesday's election losses, and many of them are fearful of my political influence. Some Republicans are terrified of my political capabilities. Especially, now, with the Democratic Party on a winning track, if they stick to what they did in the run-up to Tuesday's elections.
"There are some Republicans," LaRouche concluded, "who have been obsessed with me for decades, particularly since they observed, up close, my collaboration with the late President Ronald Reagan, in devising what came to be known as the Strategic Defense Initiative. For some Republicans—and they know who they are; I don't have to name names—my SDI work with President Reagan has been a point of absolute obsession ever since."
LaRouche indicated that he might have the occasion to say more about the Mehlman flap in his Nov. 16 international webcast from Washington.
