Feingold Punts on Impeachment

July 22, 2007 (EIRNS)—This release was issued today by the Lyndon LaRouche Political Action Committee (LPAC).

Appearing on Meet the Press today, Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, punted on the necessity of impeaching Dick Cheney, and instead announced that he intends to introduce two censure resolutions in the Senate primarily against President Bush and secondarily against Vice President Cheney and other administration officials for "misconduct relating to the war in Iraq and for their repeated assaults on the rule of law."

Feingold stated that the Bush Administration has carried out "the greatest assault on the Constitution, perhaps in American history," and that in his view, "impeachable offenses" have been committed. Nonetheless, Feingold defended his cowardly refusal to push for Cheney's impeachment and to push for censure instead as a "moderate course, not tying up the Senate and the House with an impeachment trial, but simply passing resolutions that make sure that the historical record shows the way they have weakened our country, weakened our country militarily and against al-Qaeda, weakened our country's fundamental document, the Constitution. I think that's a reasonable course and does not get in the way of our normal work."

One has to ask, if the nation is being destroyed and the Constitution is being violated, what is this "normal work" that that he thinks the Congress should be doing? Unless Feingold changes course, the only thing that history will show is that he and his colleagues were too cowardly to change history and save this nation.

Lyndon LaRouche commented on Feingold's proposal: Members of the German Reichstag had similar views of how to deal with Hitler, before they ended up in hard-labor and concentration camps.
